We stopped at Union Square Donuts in Somerville, MA first, which I had never been to before. I can't say the word "heavenly" enough when describing this place! The donuts are neither light nor dense, they just have the perfect pillow-y cushion-like texture, and the different flavors are all delicious! I loved their Sea-Salted Bourbon Caramel...yeah, I know, right?! We couldn't decide on just one for each of us, so we got one for each of us...plus another half a dozen, that way we got to sample all the flavors. As I sit writing this with a box still full of half eaten donuts on our counter, I wonder what we were thinking... to quote my favorite comedy TV series "Psych" "I was seduced by delicious flavor!". Anyway, its definitely worth a trip if you are ever around the Boston area.
After feeding our bellies, it was time to feed out minds. We chose the Isabella Stewart Gardener Museum for the best saturation. It was an amazing experience! The first thing you notice as you enter is the sound of a single violin...then the courtyard comes into view, and the violist sits in the middle of green house heaven, by himself, always playing the lovely music which you can hear from any room in the museum. Each room you come to is full of amazing works of art, from ancients in the garden, so 19th century in the Blue Room, and throughout the building you see skeleton frames on the walls where priceless Rembrandts and Manets once sat, lost in the heist years ago... There are portraits of kings and queens, and of unknowns, each one as amazing as the next. You can't help but catch a glimpse of the courtyard from practically every room, and it is hard to take your eyes off it! The museum was small, and we did it in two hours, but if we weren't on such a time crunch we could have spent much longer!
But alas, we were torn away for necessary errand running, and a hot chocolate stop... We walked Newbury Street for a bit, eating lunch at Shake Shack, before heading to L.A. Burdick Chocolate for dessert... I fully admit we overindulged this trip...
My mom bought these walking tour cards of Boston, and we whipped out the one for Beacon Hill. It took us all around the area, pointing out different landmarks and historic homes. We popped in some shops, took photos everywhere, admired the architecture and the little flower shop, all the while attempting not to trip on the uneven sidewalks and cobblestone streets. It is definitely my favorite part of the city, and I dream of living on those quiet streets someday with good food and good shopping at my fingertips, and more dogs than I could pet in one square block, let alone one square mile!
Exhausted, and with blisters on our feet, we returned home triumphant, with more historic knowledge under our belts, and donuts in our hands. Until next time, sweet Boston!
